HydroBox
HydroBox Gain Settings
Question: How much GAIN should I set based on the water depth? What is the relationship between GAIN and depth?
Answer: In simple terms, the deeper the depths the more GAIN is required because the sound waves get weaker the more distance they travel.
When operating the Hydrobox in depths from say 2m to 100m, I would first select AUTO mode of operation and in most cases the Hydrobox should operate normally and provide you with the correct depth. In cases where it does not, simply select an appropriate RANGE then start with maybe 5dB of GAIN in shallow water (under 10m), then 10dB in depths 10-50m and 15dB in depths over 50m. Slowly increase the gain until you have a valid digitized depth. After that you may want to add a little more GAIN to make sure you have enough then perform your survey. You should not need to change GAIN very much unless your surveying areas with very steep slopes.
